The experiments in this kit derive from the principal of Lenz's Law, a theory discovered in 1834. For example, when a magnet falls through the copper tube, the magnetic field surrounding the magnet is constantly changing positions. This changing of the magnetic field induces (forces) the flow of eddy currents 9circular electric currents) in the tube. The eddy currents create their own magnetic field that 'pushes' against the falling magnet and opposes (repels) the magnet's fall. The result of this magnetic repulsion is a slowly falling magnet.
